I am writing a story that takes place in the 1950's. I need four good full names for female characters, ages 16-25. What names were popular back then and not too cliche?
What are some good women's names that were common in the 1950's?
I will direct you to the Baby Name Wizard - you can explore by gender, birth year, and spelling. Linda, Dixie, Phyllis, Marlene... There are a lot of names, these women would be in their mid 50s to early 70s now.
Reply:The SSA website is great for research, but you cannot look at names from the 1950s, if your characters are 16 to 25 years old.
They were obviously born in the 20s, 30s or 40 (depending when exactly in the 50s your story takes place):
1920s:

1930s:
http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/decade...
1940s:
http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/decade...
Or just look up the exact birthyear:
http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/
Reply:Mary, Linda, Patricia, Susan, Deborah/Debra, Barbara, Karen, Nancy, Donna, Cynthia, Sandra, Pamela, Sharon, Kathleen, Carol, Diane, Brenda, Cheryl, Janet, Elizabeth, Kathy, Margaret, Janice, Carolyn, Denise, Judy, Rebecca, Joyce, Teresa, Christine, Catherine, Shirley, Judith.
and more here on this website http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/decade... - I got as far as 34.
Reply:We must assume that women in the 1950's were born about 1930. The top ten in the 1930's were Mary, Betty, Barbara, Shirley, Patricia, Dorothy, Joan, Margaret, Nancy and Helen.
You can see the top 100 at the following site:

Reply:By full you mean first and middle?
Audrey Katharine/Catherine
Marilyn Elizabeth
Beverly Christine
Victoria Marie
I also recommend looking at the social security administration's list

Reply:As a child of the 50s, I can tell you that the four most popular girl names when I was in school were:
Patty (Patricia)
Debbie (Deborah)
Linda
Kathy (Katherine/Kathleen)
There were dozens of us back then!
Reply:Audrey Claire

Francis Lilian
Dorian Grace

Name 5 Unusual plants. Provide their common names and briefly describe their unusual characteristics.?
Please have the correct words pls...
Name 5 Unusual plants. Provide their common names and briefly describe their unusual characteristics.?
Rafflesia - Rafflesia arnoldii: this parasitic plant develops the world's largest bloom that can grow over three feet across. The flower is a fleshy color, with spots that make it look like a teenager's acne-ridden skin. It smells bad and has a hole in the center that holds six or seven quarts of water. The plant has no leaves, stems, or roots.
Jackal food - Hydnora africana, an unusual flesh-colored, parasitic flower that attacks the nearby roots of shrubby in arid deserts of South Africa. The putrid-smelling blossom attracts herds of carrion beetles.
Voodoo Lily - Dracunculus vulgaris: smells like rotting flesh, and has a burgundy-colored, leaf-like flower that projects a slender, black appendage.
Titan arum - Amorphophallus: means, literally, "shapeless male genetalia." The name comes from the shape of the protruding black spadix.
Coniferous tree - Wollemia nobilis: This bizarre-looking tree was known only from 120 million-year-old fossil leaves before 1994; fewer than one hundred exist in the wild. They have strange bark that looks like bubbles of chocolate, multiple trunks, and ferny-looking leaves growing in spirals. They can grow up to 125 feet tall.

josh and ryan are nice those so called different names are UGLY, come up with some better different names
Reply:I love both common and uncommon names, as long as the uncommon names aren't made up. Keegan and Lorelai are cute, but I fear Cormick would get made fun of in school. Josh and Ryan are great names as well, strong and classic.
For instance my favorite names, Elisabeth, Emma, Kate, Claire, Wesley, Lucas, and Connor, which are all pretty common
But I also like, Wyatt, Seth, Dorian, Talon, Lennox, Carlin, Harlan, Norah, Ainsley, Keeley, and Taryn.
My advice is if you're going to ask people's opinions on here, don't take it to heart. If you like the name, then go for it because it doesn't really matter what these people think...only what you think!
Reply:I like commom names i hate the new weird ones i named my son David Anthony my maiden name is Ryan. so yeah I love that name.. I like the name Josh or Joshua i love the names christopher Matthew Kevin Kyle Joseph
Sarah Jessica Rebeca Samatha but i hate sam
Reply:i like lorelai!
keegan is a really cool name too. i personally like cole...its a little different. one of my other favorites is lowell. i just think it sounds cool!!
Reply:Really, in my opinion it doesn't matter what other people think, as long as you know what you are naming your child and you like it thats all that matters.
PS: I love Josh and Ryan! They're amazing names!
Reply:I love the names Josh and Ryan and Keegan is really nice too.
I do agree with you though...I've noticed that too.
Reply:you'll get that with any name you put up. keegan is cute, i also know a guy named teagan, braedon anda girl named Loraleigh. I think they're really good names
Reply:Are they the *same* people answering? Perhaps it's because they felt they you are going on two extremes? Too common or too wierd...
Reply:Josh and Ryan are common, but I love them. I like Keegan and Cormick though. But, not Lorelai. :)
Reply:i really like Ryan and Josh but i also like Keegan a lot people are just weird.
Reply:I like most anyway.I mean it is the parents of the child's choice.
Reply:keegan is a belter name, the next dog i get is getting that name
Reply:I agree with you!
Reply:Hi David Cook. I have this problem all the time. People are very rude about names with which they are unfamiliar. Every time I post a beloved name that's been in our family for generations I get the rudest, most hateful comments!
Hang in there and God bless!
BTW - if you want to choose this as the Best Answer it would be OK.

What are some common Victorian Era names?
Madeline, Mary, Margaret, Milicent, Miranda, Marjory, Muriel for the girls.
Kenneth and Adam, Arbothnot, Ambrose, Aubrey, Archibald, Arnold, Artemis, Augustus for the boys.
Reply:The Social Security Administration keeps track of baby names, and you can look up the most popular names for any year starting with 1880. Go to this link and scroll down to "Popular Names by Birth Year": http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/

What names are common in different regions and populations within Mexico?
I'm looking for information about whether different names are more and less common in different regions and among different populations in Mexico. In particular:
1) Near the border in Texas (Juarez) or in LA (TJ)?
2) Are different names more common in rural as opposed to urban areas?
3) Are certain names more common among older people or younger people? (e.g. Agnes in the US)
What names are common in different regions and populations within Mexico?
Considering that the majority of old school Mexicans name their kids after one of the many saints on any given day of the calender, it's pretty much even across the board. (Jesus, Maria, Jose, as well as other Biblical names, are the most popular.) Modern Mexicans, on the other hand, are naming their kids all sort of foreign names from many cultures around the world. Some of the Mexicans from rural, non-Castilian speaking areas, name their kids in the language (Nahuatl, Zapotec, Mixtec, Tarasco, Toltec and so on) of their ancestors. It is not uncommon to find Pedros, Marias, Jeniffers, Claudes, Getrudes, Quetzalcoatls, Xochitls and myriad others all over Mexico, regardless of region or state.
