the IUPAC names make more sense to me, like ethyne does make sense because its 2 carbons with a triple covalent bond, but why do most people call it acetelene instead of ethyne. Acetelene doesnt make any sense
Why are the common names more famous than IUPAC names?
In some cases the common names were created before the IUPAC created the nomenclature system. Also some of the IUPAC names can get ridiculously long especially for some of the organic compounds with many functional groups so therefore a common name was created for them.
