Why do parents name their children common names?

First of all, the names aren't handsome/pretty. And second of all, everyone has to call them "Ryan C." or "James B." in elementary school! It's inconvenient, mean, and just plain lazy!

I agree that people could be a little bit more creative with the names they choose for their children, but like the previous girl stated...it's probably a family name. I named my daughter Sophia Raven. I liked the middle name b/c of Edgar Allan Poe and Sophia is just a gorgeous name, but I wouldn't have named her Starla, just to be different.
Reply:You can pronounce it.

You can spell it.

It is classic and charming.

It is better than Apple.

Although, it is actually the trendy names that cause a lot of kids with the same name in a class. Like Jennifer and Brittany.
Reply:Who cares? It's not your kid! I paid for all 3 spaces on the birth certificate, I will fill all 3 spaces with whatever name I want. I personally give you permission to name your baby Abcde or anyother unique name you can think of.
Reply:I would much rather have a common name than a horrid name that kids make fun of. I have the most common name from the late 60s to the early 90s.... Jennifer. It sucked sometimes but its better than being a Shunekwah. :)
Reply:My son has a very "common" name. I like it. It's classic and timeless.
Reply:maybe it was a family name...and who cares if you don't like it...I personally LOVE the name Ryan!
Reply:Well I think some parents just don't want their children to be teased if they give them an odd name, plus perhaps some of those are family names, not their fault it is common.
Reply:My children are Joshua and Emily the 3rd and 1st most popular names. My husband and I did this mainly because we both have unusual names and having grown up with that stigma, we decided to go with common ones. It is not lack of creativity (we had quite a few unusual names picked out before we had kids!) but not wanting them to be teased and mispronounced their entire lives.

First of all, the names aren't handsome/pretty. And second of all, everyone has to figure out how to pronounce their name. It's inconvenient, mean and just plain lazy!
Reply:usually, it's a name that someone in the family already has or it's a name from the parents past or whatever. My brother named his son alexander because he loves alexander the great. I like AtG too but I recognize the name is rather run-of-the-mill. I think when you have a child, you don't really think of the fact that there are tons of other people out there having a child too.
Reply:For the same reason some parents name their children outrageous names that no one can pronounce or spell. To each his own. Name your kids what you want and let me name my kids what I want.
Reply:well first of all we want to. We dont want to name our children Shaniqua or Shanana okay those names are just retarded
Reply:My parents gave me an uncommon name...and I HATED it. Kids were always making fun of my name in elementary school and junior high. Not to mention everyone always had to ask how to spell/pronounce my name and I STILL have relatives who can't spell my name right! I would have killed to be named Sarah or Jennifer.

I would never wish that on my children. We have an Ian, a Shaun, an Audrey and a Bridget. And they have never complained about their names.
Reply:Each of my biological children were named after someone very important in my life that is no longer with me.

daughter Cleeda ofter Grandmother (I know very rare)

sons Dalton and Allen, both after brother who died at age 22 and was my best friend. It was my way of honoring them.

My other 3 were named by birth parents
