What are some common russian last names, and how are they pronounced?

The most common Russian last names come of first names, like Ivan - Ivanov [iva'nof] for male and Ivanova [iva'nova] for female, Petr - Petrov [pet'rof] and Petrova [pet'rova], Stepan - Stepanov [ste'panof] and Stepanova, Vasily - Vasiliev [va'silief] and Vasilieva, Makar - Makarov [ma'karof] and Makarova, Pavel - Pavlov ['pavlof] and Pavlova etc.


Another class of common last names comes of simple objects: Kamenev ['kamenef] and Kameneva ['kameneva] - from kamen' - stone, Ershov [er'shov] and Ershova - from ersh - ruff, Kovalev [kova'lyov] and Kovaleva [kova'lyova] - from koval' - dated word blacksmith etc.


Acoording to statistitcs the most widspread are: 1. Ivanov, 2. Smirnov, 3. Kovalev (together with Kovalenko, Koval'sky, Koval').

Reply:Many russian last names end in "ov" which is pronounced as "of". Other common russian last names end in "sky" which is pronounced as "ski".
Reply:the most most most common everyone would say to you Ivanov, Petrov and Sidorov. Pronounce them all as you see it, except the last letter v as f.
