Why do people try to make common names 'unique' by spelling them differently?

I think its so stupid cause no matter how you spell it its still the same name! so it's not "unique". lol.

I know a girl named Khrystelle pronounced Crystal -.-

that's probably the worst "unique" spelling of that name.

ughh! i can't stand it..

Why do people try to make common names 'unique' by spelling them differently?
I actually like the "unique" spellings, so that way there's some diversity when names become ridiculously common like Hailey. There's Hayley, Hailey, Haylie, etc. However, if you're going to name Elizabeth as Alyssibythhe then that is ridiculous.

I went to high school with a kid named Xaquari (pronounced Zackary). I thought it was pretty cool.

The thing is, there are so many ways to spell names that you don't have common spellings anymore. Kathryn, Catherine, and Katharine are all common and completely acceptable names. As are Kristin, Kristan, Krysten, Christin, Kristen, etc. No matter how you spell your name, whether it's Christin or Krystyn, someone is still going to screw it up unless you spell it out loud. So you get aggrevated no matter what spelling you have! Even if your name is Nicole someone is still going to write down Nichole unless you spell it!

Besides when you grow up with that name, it's not going to cause problems for you because that's how YOU know it to be spelled. I get Infinity all the time and I have NO problem saying "That's Infinity, the number, ending in an i".

And no, it's NOT true that people hate their parents for their names if they spell them wrong. I don't hate my mother for naming me Infiniti.....I'd hate her if she called me Harper or Katie because they are SO common!
Reply:i dont understand the point of it... it just more complicated for the kid.... and it saound the same! besides i also hate all those "unique" names... its not like the child wont deal with ppl teasing him/her and then on top of that the parent give them some ridiculous name... I dont care about your thumbs down ppl... you all know its true :)
Reply:I like unique
Reply:i think its ok, as long as the name isnt too out there. like lohrenne instead of loren or lauren.

Meagha instead of Mia

Izzabellah instead of isabella.

I think these people are just attention seekers.
Reply:I really don't know, but I agree with you, it's like Matthew and Mathew (?), not an extreme example, but I get the point I have a (now) common name, wasn't that common when I was growing up but now it is and people often spell it Madyson or something like that. I agree, just because it's spelled different doesn't make it special.
Reply:I only have a problem with it if it is way too extreme...sometimes ppl cram way too many letters in there. My daughters name is Mailee (pronounced Miley). I love it...(.and I did not name her after Miley Cyrus.) It is actually a pretty Hawaiian name with a beautiful meaning. Anyway...I get more annoyed when ppl pick a boring overused name than when they go with something a little more unique. Don't get me wrong....some ppl do go overboard and try to hard to be unique- but really why would you want your child to have the same name as 5 other kids in their kindergarden class....and really it isn't all that tramatizing to have to spell your name out. Ppl who know you will know how to spell it and it really wont make a difference. My name is Megan spelled Meagan....that name is spelled so many different ways. Alot of ppl misspell it-but it really isn't that big of a deal. Even if if was spelled -Megan- it would still get mispelled.
Reply:Ok actually it does make it unique because virtually its not the SAME NAME....the same pronunciation, yes....but with the spelling being different it makes it unique and gives it ITS OWN twist....
Reply:i dont like it my sis is haveing a girl soon and is speeling the name diffrent then what it is speeled. i dont like my name it is unique i think my name is wilma.
Reply:I guess it also depends on a persons belief. like in my nephew's case his name is supposedly spell as kyle christian but since my sister's mother in law disagree since the letter counts into 13 and she believes that number 13 bring bad luck we change the name kyle into kiele.
Reply:i'm with you. i have a common name, but it's spelled differently and it sucked growing up. i always have to spell it and no one can pronounce it right. christel - pronounced crystal.
Reply:to try to be unique

what is the problem with that

nobody wants to be like everyone else

so if the parents did not have much imagination and gave you a common name ,it stands to reason you would want it to be more individual ,more special ,more unique
Reply:Someone told me about the name Zachary... but spelled Xaquari - I thought that was cool!!

Theres too many Ashleys, Jessicas, Mikes, Johns, and when they are all spelled the same there is no individuality...

My kids are Jerzee, Jissella, Jase and now we are expecting another baby... i think people should be able to name thier children whatever they want!!
Reply:Everyone wants to be unique in some way. I don't think it makes it harder on the child.
Reply:I agree that spelling doesnt look very nice and its a little extra but it is unique weather its pronouced different or not. Even simple changes to names like people named Sara Sarah you always hear ppl say with "NO "H" cuz thats the better way" like the ppl named sarah are proud they have an H and its their own unique thing.

that was kinda confusing hope it makes sense

spelling it a different way is unique
Reply:thats why its called "Unique"..what is unique for you?according to meriam-webster dictionary unique means being the only one or unusual.

maybe in this case it is not a "sound" unique but a "spelling" unique. but it is still unique.

but it depends to the person's point of view. some people may like and some people dont and some people may go to both. And you are in the dont-people group. so for me, no matter whats the other people opinion its vary and they have the rights.we just human, so be happy and dont take small things distract yr mood.=) maybe will get thumb-down but i dont mind, we have the rights to point out our view.if they cant accept others people view, whats the point of asking others opinion?
Reply:Jon and Kate (I don't know if you are familiar with the reality show) spell all there kids names normally, accept for Aaden. I had only seen it spelled Aidan. They probably figured that it was a modern enough name anyway, to change the spelling, but I am just speculating. Or maybe it was so modern they just got the spelling wrong?
Reply:I agree; it doesn't take any imagination to spell Khrystelle as Crystal; all it takes is someone not having any common sense. The pronunciation is the same; all it does is create troubles for whomever has the name.

One of my closest friends in high school was named Nicholle, and there were SO many times I heard her have to say "No, Nicole with an H and two L's" or sometimes she just took the Nicole. And then, there must have been dozens of other Nicoles in the school already!

I'm sure it would be quite annoying at hospitals as well; especially if it's a common name like Emily, and someone decides to spell it Emelly.

People can find unique names; they don't need to spell boring names incorrectly. I plan on naming my daughter (if I ever get a daughter) a genuine name that isn't common nor spelled incorrectly.
Reply:Wow, i've never seen Crystal spelled like the before that's a little over the top! but I kinda like it though, and I think it IS unique cause it's different (even though its a very common name, the spelling does make it unique), BUT I agree with what your saying about how its more trouble to the kid, my name isn't even spelled that uniquely (my name is Khrystal. haha) and people always assume it's spelled C-r-y-s-t-a-l. I always have to be explaining that its spelled with a K and an h! I can imagine having to explain Khrystelle. lol.
Reply:Some ppl may like the name but not the spelling and a certain spelling of a name may be popular and its nice to be different...i hate names that are common (well i dont hate them but wouldnt use them for my child) if i liked a name that was common id change the spelling...

For example i like Olivia but id spell it Aliviya, And Faith but id spell it Faythe....

Its entirly up to the person but everyone is different and has different preferences...as long as ur happy and everyone else is happy with their childs name and spelling then whats the problem.
