I am writing a story that takes place in the 1950's. I need four good full names for female characters, ages 16-25. What names were popular back then and not too cliche?
What are some good women's names that were common in the 1950's?
I will direct you to the Baby Name Wizard - you can explore by gender, birth year, and spelling. Linda, Dixie, Phyllis, Marlene... There are a lot of names, these women would be in their mid 50s to early 70s now.
Reply:The SSA website is great for research, but you cannot look at names from the 1950s, if your characters are 16 to 25 years old.
They were obviously born in the 20s, 30s or 40 (depending when exactly in the 50s your story takes place):
1920s:

1930s:

1940s:

Or just look up the exact birthyear:

Reply:Mary, Linda, Patricia, Susan, Deborah/Debra, Barbara, Karen, Nancy, Donna, Cynthia, Sandra, Pamela, Sharon, Kathleen, Carol, Diane, Brenda, Cheryl, Janet, Elizabeth, Kathy, Margaret, Janice, Carolyn, Denise, Judy, Rebecca, Joyce, Teresa, Christine, Catherine, Shirley, Judith.
and more here on this website http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/decade... - I got as far as 34.
Reply:We must assume that women in the 1950's were born about 1930. The top ten in the 1930's were Mary, Betty, Barbara, Shirley, Patricia, Dorothy, Joan, Margaret, Nancy and Helen.
You can see the top 100 at the following site:
