What were some common last names for African American people in the late 1800s?
Freeman became really popular among some former slaves after emancipation. Having the last name of their old owners only reminded them of that time and showed that they still exercised a tiny bit of influence over them, so they wanted to become known as a "free man" ... Freeman. Pretty cool, creative idea they had :)
Reply:Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson or the name of the slaveholder they lived under. Often the name of the nearest Town or City - that sort of thing.
Reply:they didn't have last names. When they were required to have them, they took the last name of their owners.
