Do you like unique names or common names for babies?

I have a unique name and I always wanted to be a Mary or Ann or something simple. I named my son Matthew so he would have a more normal name.

Do you like unique names or common names for babies?
i like something that is an actual name

not something made up, or spelled wrong or anything like that.

So i guess i prefer common names.
Reply:Well my name is Maleah and I hated it until I was older because I could never find my name on anything, like the tags for bikes, key chains, all that stuff.

But now I am glad that my name was not Casey, Mary, or Brittney (most common names from when I was in high school, nothing is wrong with them or anything). I just like the fact that not everyone else has my name. Yeah people say it wrong ALL the time though.

But I think that I want to give my children common names with more unique spellings.

Reply:I think unique is too often the same as bizarre and does the child no favor.

To me, common names are the ones everybody uses which include all the aiden/braydon/jaydon/kadon atrocities, the bailey/hailey/kaleigh/ryleyii nightmares, and all the La-De-Ja names (LaQueishia, Deshawn, Jamarcus)

I prefer classic names--no intentional misspellings, no random capital letters in the middle, no stray diacritical marks
Reply:I don't like "unique" as in made up, weird invented spellings or the such. To me unique names are less common and more traditional, which is what my husband and I tend to gravitate towards in choosing them. I don't like common and trendy names because after the fad wears off it's just weird and there is nothing personal about it when you have twenty other "Ava" or "Riley" names in your neighborhood or child's school. I want to know if I holler down to the neighbors my child's name I don't get ten kids turning around looking at me like "which one of us do you want!?"

We named my son Spencer because where we live it's not common at all. It's rare. We're hoping for a second child and we like Theodore for a boy and Charlotte for a girl, both of which are not common where we live either. I know that they may not be everyone's "cup of tea" when it comes to names, but we like them and that is all that really matters.

Reply:I like both....I, too, have a unique name and I don't mind it....My name is Jolyn and there isn't too many women with this name....I named my kids Justin and Kaylee, not because they are common, but, because I like them....Kaylee wasn't common when I had my daughter....The ONLY reason I named her this is because, KAY is my middle name and LEE is my older brothers middle name....I guess the only names I don't really care for are names that are REALLY old....
Reply:There's a huge space between unique and common.

My mother's given name is quite rare. It's not truly unique - there are a handful of others given the name over time - but she's never met another. It drove her nuts - always having to spell it and correct the pronunciation and explain how it came to be.

She gave me the name that ended up being the second most popular choice for girls born in 1973, second only to Jennifer. I went through school being one of many Amys.

I hated that, too. I legally changed my name in my late 20s. (Actually, I legally changed my middle name and it's what I wear in daily use - changing my first name at that point felt impossible.)

We've tried to find compromises for our own children - names that are familiar, but not often heard. I wouldn't invent something out of the blue - my mother's name, for example, was her parents' attempt to Americanize an Italian family name. It's a bit clunky. But there are countless names out there that we all recognize but that our kids won't share with any one else.

Think of it this way: more than 19,000 girls born in the US were named Emily last year; something like 13,000 were called Hannah. But less than 1,000 were named Cora, Eliza, Genevieve, Anya, Francesca or Meredith.

It doesn't take a ton of effort to find something that will be distinctive without being eye-poppingly strange. My husband grew up as an Arthur, an odd choice for 1970s, but one that he really likes.

Where you live matters, too. Our kids are Alexei and Clio - but we live in a huge metro area, where their friends are Seamus and Ronan, Maeve and Canyon, Hazel and Iceline. If we were in a small town in rural America, maybe I wouldn't dare use such unusual names. But here, they're about as normal as ... well everyone else's crazy name.
Reply:I like both

Commons names today

Emily, Elizabeth, Ava, Isabella are top ten names

Nevaeh, hevaen spelled backwards is a top 50 name(I hate this name)

You can have a name like Jodi, that people know, but you never meet many

I like some uncommon names

I ike Anne, Rose, they are not in the top 100 names

Reply:I LOVE UNIQUE names! I hated having friends in school who were Crystal S. Crystal W. and Crystal P. or Jennifer L. and Jennifer W. or Amanda M. or Amanda S.-you get my point. Be original. Matthew is a cute name, don't get me wrong, but why name your children something everyone has heard a million times? My name is Autumn and I love it!
Reply:i have an unusaual name and everyone says its nice though it is a bit thiring when everyone gets it wrong isnt it? but i love unusaul names they are really nice and make people remember you, and also when im somewhere where all the peoples names are common i feel special lol... but its up to what you think really its your opinion..
Reply:i love traditional names. my name is rose. i have 3 kids- james lee, john michael, and sean patrick. we were seriously considering the name matthew but last minute switched to sean. if i ever have a girl she will be victoria rose.

Reply:I didn't like growing up with a name that everyone else had-

but at the same time, you don't want a weird name like Princess Tiaamii (and yeah, I've probably spelt it wrong). I read on the net that one baby was called 'sexfruit'. Yeah, lol. Again, thats not very nice. BUT, if its a pretty name then it'll be nice :D
Reply:I like both. As long as it's not super boring and overused, like Katie, or really weird like Kaputtalus, it's usually fine with me. I have rare name- Zalika, and I wouldn't change it for the world. I like not being one of 50 people I know who share the same name!
Reply:a bit of both, a common one for first name and unique for second so it saves the person from having to answer how do you pronounce that over and over again. believe me its sooooo annoying xx
Reply:I'm kind of in-between. I don't like super popular names like Madison, Abigail, etc. But I don't like ones that are totally out there. My top 10 is about half traditional, half unique names.
Reply:my name is unique (feriel) in arabic=Princesse, french= from the word strawberry in english i have no clue my be the little mermaid from Disney land loll

anyway i prefer unique names
Reply:I like both. I like names like Sky, Phoenix and Reo, but I also like Lilly, Abigail and James.
Reply:I happen to like unique names that aren't over the top. Especially long outrageous names with complicated spelling.
Reply:I like a bit of both..unique but classic. I despise made up names that are impossible to spell and pronounce, as well as cutesy common names.
Reply:i like unique names way better. or just uncommon, classic names; old names that aren't used much.
Reply:I like names that are not really common but not so out there, my kids names are Brenden, Logan, and Layne.
Reply:Definitely Unique!
Reply:Common.

I know a girl who's last name is Rialis and she named her baby Aurora Bo.

Can you say STRIPPER %26gt;?
Reply:diffenetly unique
Reply:kind of common meaning that its cool and know ones stolen the name like i haven't heard violet in a long time!
